PHOTOGRAPHS WERE PUBLISHED in The Sun this weekend of Great British Bakeoff’s Paul Hollywood beaming as he wears a Nazi uniform in a pub.
In the photographs published by The Sun, Hollywood can be seen standing beside a friend who had also donned the uniform which is (and was at the time) abhorred by most people.
51-year-old Hollywood released a statement to Metro.co.uk:
I am absolutely devastated if this caused offence to anyone, the picture was taken 14 years ago en route to a Comedy TV Shows Themed New Year’s Eve Party and a group of us dressed up as characters from the classic TV show ‘Allo ‘Allo.
1) 14 years ago Nazis were still bad. People found the gag in ‘Allo ‘Allo distasteful at the time. This isn’t just a new thing we discovered in 2017.
Swastikas and Nazi imagery and medals are incredibly offensive and insensitive to Jewish people, any group of people targeted by Nazis, the general public and veterans like his own grandfather.
2)That’s an extremely specifically themed New Year’s Eve party.
He went on to say:
Everyone who knows me, knows I am incredibly proud of the efforts of those, including my own grandfather, who fought against the Nazis during the war.
Which somehow makes it a bit worse. If your family fought the Nazis, you’d probably know a bit better than to dress up as the group that killed up to 20 million people.
